Deductive reasoning moves from general rules to a specific, certain conclusion, while inductive reasoning moves from specific observations to a general, probable conclusion.
Both are ways of drawing conclusions, but they differ in direction and in how certain the conclusion is.
If the starting premises are true, the conclusion is guaranteed to be true. Example: "All mammals are warm-blooded. A whale is a mammal. Therefore, a whale is warm-blooded." This is the type of reasoning used in syllogism questions and formal logic.
Draws a general conclusion from specific examples or patterns, but the conclusion is only probable, not guaranteed. Example: "Every swan I've seen is white. Therefore, all swans are probably white." This conclusion turned out to be wrong once black swans were discovered — which illustrates exactly why inductive conclusions are probable, not certain.
Competitive exam reasoning sections mostly test deductive reasoning (syllogisms, logical puzzles with defined rules), since it has objectively correct answers that can be scored precisely.
