Interview Prep

What is the STAR method for behavioral interview questions?

Short answer

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result — a structure for answering "tell me about a time when…" questions with a clear, complete story instead of a vague summary.

Behavioral questions ask about specific past experiences ("Tell me about a time you disagreed with a manager," "Describe a project that failed") because past behavior is a strong predictor of future behavior. STAR gives you a repeatable structure to answer them clearly.

Preparing with STAR

Before interviews, prepare 5–6 STAR stories covering common themes: a conflict you resolved, a failure you learned from, a time you led something, a time you influenced someone without authority, and a time you handled pressure or a tight deadline. Having these ready means you're adapting a known story to the question, rather than improvising from scratch.
