Hiring and training someone is expensive, so companies want some signal that a candidate's ambitions are compatible with the path this specific job could realistically lead to.
Keep it grounded rather than overly specific about titles ("I want to be VP by 2031" can sound presumptuous). Instead, describe the kind of skills, responsibility, or impact you want to have grown into, and connect it to the trajectory this role offers — for example, moving from individual contributor work into leading projects, or deepening expertise in a specific specialty the company invests in.
It's fine to admit some uncertainty about the exact path, as long as you show the direction is thought through.
